Marimba Consortium
Organized by Dr. Jeffery Crowell

Deadline extended until July 6th!
"My name is Dr Jeffery Crowell and I’m forming a consortium to commission a piece for solo marimba by Alex Stopa. To help share the expense of this project, each person makes a small contribution, sharing the commission fee between those in the consortium.

Here’s Alex to tell you a little more about the project:"

About the music:

“Jeff and I discussed that this should be a serious concert piece, for advanced players. It should be technically challenging, harmonically engaging, and offer the performer opportunities to demonstrate their depth of musicality. Stylistically, it should be accessible to a wide audience. Jeff used my marimba duo “Sequoia”, as a stylistic reference. The piece will be around 7 minutes in duration. I have a ‘work in progress’ that fits this description well, and so I’ve been working hard to finish up the piece so that it can be performed!”
The inspiration for the piece:

“In 1990 an incredible portrait of planet Earth was captured by the Voyager 1 spacecraft. Taken from a distance of 4 billion miles, the photograph shows our home planet, Earth, as a tiny point of pale light, barely visible in the immensity of space. The image is at once humbling and awe-inspiring, highlighting the fleeting nature of human existence in the vastness of our universe.
Accompanying the image of this “Pale Blue Dot”, is an extraordinary description by American astronomer, Carl Sagan. Some thirty years later, as humanity and civilization push our planet to its limits, Sagan’s message of preservation and compassion resonates with an even greater urgency.” – Alex Stopa
